Amazon Prime Day 2024 sales hit record $14.2 billion

U.S. consumers spent $14.2 billion across July 16 and 17, according to Adobe Analytics. Electronics and furniture drove a lot of sales, with back-to-school shopping also clocking high growth. Customers used buy now pay later (BNPL) for orders worth $1.08 billion, contributing to 7.6% of sales. Read more on TechCrunch.

Backlash after Pret changes coffee subscription deal

Pret A Manger customers have reacted with anger after the coffee and sandwich chain announced it would be changing its subscription offer. Currently, subscribers can order up to five coffees a day for a monthly fee of £30. But starting in September, Pret will end its 20% discount on food and offer up to five half-price coffees a day for £10 a month. Read more on BBC. 

Deezer chases Spotify and Amazon Music with its own AI playlist generator

The company announced that 5% of its paid subscribers will get access to the beta “Playlist with AI” feature. Users will be able to create new playlists from written prompts that describe moods, genres, decades, activities, and other factors. Read more on TechCrunch.

Netflix adds 8 million subscribers, disappoints on revenue outlook

Subscriber additions of 8M beat expectations of 4.7M and followed the 9.3 million net additions the streamer added in the first quarter. Revenue hit $9.56 billion in Q2, as the streamer continued to lean into top-line initiatives like its crackdown on password sharing and ad-supported tier, in addition to last year's price hikes on certain subscription plans.
