Recurly Announces Subscription Billing Add-On For Heroku

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – December 2, 2010 – Recurly, Inc. the leading subscription billing management service for developers, today announced the availability of its hosted subscription billing service through an Add-On integration with Heroku. Heroku is a cloud application platform as a service (PaaS) company, which provides provisionless deployment, management, and operation of Ruby web applications.

Subscription business models have grown in popularity with the explosion of mobile and cloud-based application offerings. Since its launch in January of 2010, Recurly’s service has become a popular solution for SaaS, Web 2.0, Social and Mobile application developers seeking to outsource the painful billing function. Recurly is now actively handling subscription billing for hundreds of companies, including Slideshare, Fox News Radio, GOOD magazine, and has reduced its average time to live customer deployments to less than 5 days – from account sign-up to live deployment.

Unlike one-time transactions, subscription billing requires specific knowledge of the payment industry in order to successfully navigate the many scenarios that can trigger credit card errors and declines, resulting in additional operational overhead as well as customer churn for businesses. The Recurly service handles many common credit card error scenarios and automates customer communications, allowing merchants to focus on their business rather than the complexity of recurring billing.

“Heroku is an ideal platform for Recurly to offer subscription billing services,” said Isaac Hall, CEO of Recurly. “Billing is an extremely important function for all businesses, yet very few businesses view it as their core competency. Heroku’s customers are already accustomed to outsourcing important supporting infrastructure for their business.”

“We're excited to see the availability of the Recurly Add-On in beta,” said James Lindenbaum, Co-Founder of Heroku. “Easy access to subscription billing is a great step forward in enabling developers to quickly build thriving businesses on the Heroku cloud platform."

Heroku customers can launch subscription-based applications with the Recurly Add-On in just hours if they already have a supported PayPal or payment gateway account. The benefit to application developers is that they maintain a single billing relationship with Heroku, and access to customer account information in Recurly is available via single sign-on from Heroku. All revenue generated from the sale of subscriptions to a developer’s application or service is deposited directly into the developer’s merchant account.
