Recurly Appoints Samuel Parker as Chief Operating Officer

Former executive of SAY Media, CBS Interactive joins Recurly to scale operations as company continues rapid growth

February 19, 2014—San Francisco, Calif.—Recurly, Inc. announced today that Sam Parker has joined the company as chief operating officer (COO). A 20-year business veteran and former executive of SAY Media, CBS Interactive and CNET Networks, Parker strengthens Recurly’s executive bench by bringing deep experience in scaling business operations.

As COO, Parker will contribute leadership experience and industry perspective to help scale Recurly’s business. Having managed a portfolio of subscription-based businesses during his tenure at SAY Media and CBS Interactive, Parker brings a deep appreciation and understanding of the complexities and challenges inherent in subscription billing from both operational and technical perspectives.

“Welcoming Sam in this COO role marks a significant milestone in the evolution of Recurly,” said Dan Burkhart, CEO and co-founder of Recurly. “Our business grew 145% last year, and as we anticipate doubling our headcount yet again this year, it became clear that hiring a seasoned executive to help us navigate this exciting growth would help ensure our continued momentum and success going forward.”

Prior to joining Recurly, Parker was COO of SAY Media where he was responsible for expanding business operations, helping set the future direction of the company and management of Typepad a subscription blogging platform. He also served as CBS Interactive’s Senior Vice President of Operations, in charge of technology operations, revenue systems, and shared applications and services used by CBS Interactive brands. Parker got his start online in 1996 at CNET Networks as Director of Business Development, eventually becoming Vice President of Product Development for the company’s Snap.com portal initiative. After Snap.com went public as NBCi in 2000, Parker went to 12 Entrepreneuring as the Director of Product Strategy but returned to CNET Networks in 2001 as Senior Vice President of Global Publishing Services. He began his career as a product manager and evangelist at Apple. Parker is a graduate of Yale University.

“With subscription-based businesses and software as a service (SaaS) models booming around the globe, Recurly is uniquely positioned to deliver critical billing operations and business intelligence designed specifically to serve these rapidly growing markets,” Parker said. “I look forward to advancing Recurly’s product development, internal operations and customer support to help contribute to the company’s remarkable success to date.”

Recurly’s subscription billing platform makes complex billing and payment processes easy; helping merchants reduce credit card errors and declines up to 27 percent, improving customer retention, and increasing revenue. It supports recurring billing, metered billing for incremental consumption—such as pay-per-view experiences—as well as one-time purchases. The Recurly service enables companies to quickly create an online catalog of offerings and automate the entire billing cycle, from payments, upgrades, and downgrades to credit card errors and declines to customer communications. Using Recurly APIs, companies can seamlessly integrate their web offerings with Recurly’s billing platform and their payment gateways of choice for an end-to-end billing solution.
