We needed to accept monthly/yearly donations, and had only a couple weeks before our big launch event. We’re not yet ready to practice PCI compliance, and wanted to make sure that whatever solution we incorporated could not break under the many boundary conditions surrounding credit card payment. After investigating many hosted billing options, we settled on Recurly mainly because of its ability to offer customized plans per user.

In about a week, we created a hosted payment page for initial signup and an API-based page where people can modify their donation amount, as well as a 2nd hosted payment process targeted at the mobile web. We were able to create good-looking, branded e-mails in less than a day.

The launch event was a success, and we processed tens of thousands of dollars through Recurly. People loved using our mobile app to make their payment and were impressed by how easy it was to use, much of which is due to Recurly’s simple payment form. Basically, we were able to accept monthly donations after a week of work by 1-2 engineers, part time.
